Chua: Pakatan fishing for votes with call to abolish PTPTN

BATU PAHAT: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has described the suggestion from Pakatan Rakyat leaders to abolish the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) as a populist move aimed at getting votes in the upcoming general election.

He said that if the Opposition formed the country's government due to such promises, then the country would suffer financially.

Dr Chua said many countries like Britain, the United States, Greece, Spain and Italy were in debt or in deficit due to governments that made populist decisions during their own elections, which backfired.

“Due to the promises, the countries are now facing economic problems,” he told reporters after attending a meeting with Batu Pahat MCA leaders here yesterday.

Dr Chua said MCA would never support the abolition of PTPTN as the country would then face an economic meltdown and the education of all Malaysians would be affected.

He said that if the Opposition promised to make higher education free, then more than 500 privately-run colleges or universities in the country would have to close down as many students would not be able to afford to further their studies at these colleges.

On another matter, Dr Chua urged the Chinese in Johor not to be fooled by DAP's promises.

“DAP alleged that MCA bowed to Umno but PAS has recently announced that if the Opposition takes over Johor, its member will become the next Mentri Besar.

“It seems that DAP has to kow tow to PAS and it can never be the master in the state even if they win the state,” he said.

Dr Chua urged MCA leaders to change their mentality in facing the upcoming general election to ensure a win for Barisan Nasional.

“MCA leaders should not think that it is business as usual in the general election as the young voters are more knowledgeable. So we should make an effort to reach out to them.”
